Growing traveler numbers and increasing security needs elevates the pressure on Border Control.

In the past years air travel has shown a continuous growth. The rise in passenger numbers especially on international routes drives the demand for efficient border control processes to avoid increasing immigration queues and exhausting waiting times. Digitalization of travel documents, introduction of new security credentials and self-service border control checkpoints is an common strategy to automate border control.

Addressing the vision of a seamless passenger journey there is more work to be done. To ease the risk of immigration queues and unexpected waiting times respective passenger data needs to be processed before the passenger showing up at the border control checkpoint so immigration officers could focus on risky passengers. The Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) has been implemented by selected countries to collect passenger information from the transporting airlines at the point of origin. But this concept does not include any security credentials to validate the identity of a traveler. To address the needs of the industry stakeholders (e.g. government authorities, airlines, airports etc.) IATA has introduced the One ID initiative to provide a document-free identity management platform using biometric recognition.

Understanding the needs of border security authorities and the vision of a seamless passenger journey M2P consultants will support government entities to define the right business processes, to implement the needed technology, and to drive the change of automated border control.
